Human Resources Director

Role Summary

Starwest Botanicals is an industry leader within the organic herb, botanical, spice, and tea industry. With nearly 50 years of experience, Starwest has grown to become a global player in the wholesale ingredient space. The company is proudly based in Sacramento, California.

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Human Resources Director to oversee and manage all HR functions within the company. The HR Director will lead staffing, policy development and implementation, compliance, benefits, training and development, and employee relations. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in HR management within a manufacturing or industrial setting, excellent communication skills, and experience working closely with the C-Suite. This position is located in Sacramento, California.

Key Responsibilities

Employee Relations

  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with employees.
  • Address employee and policy issues, grievances, or concerns promptly and effectively.
  • Lead employee engagement initiatives including establishing metrics and key areas of improvement and assessing and reviewing quarterly with leadership team.

Recruitment & Onboarding

  • Manage the full-cycle recruitment process, including job postings, candidate screening, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding of new employees to meet the staffing needs of the company.
  • Partner with managers to develop 30, 60, and 90 day plans for all new hires.
  • Develop retention practices to reduce turnover.

Training & Development

  • Assess training needs and coordinate learning and development programs to enhance employee skills and performance.
  • Oversee HR related training to improve culture and maintain regulatory compliance.
  • Implement quarterly manager training.

Performance Management

  • Oversee the performance appraisal process, providing support and guidance to supervisors in managing employee performance.
  • Provide clear calendar and milestones to ensure feedback and development is addressed timely.

Compliance & Labor Relations

  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal employment laws and regulations.
  • Handle labor relations matters and maintain records required for legal and regulatory compliance.
  • Perform audits and provide teams feedback on areas for improvement.

Policy Development & Implementation

  • Develop and implement HR policies and procedures that support company goals and promote a safe and productive work environment.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Administer and monitor compensation and benefits programs to ensure competitiveness and cost-effectiveness.

Metrics and Reporting

  • Track HR metrics and generate reports to drive data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement.
  • Maintain key performance measures such as turnover and overtime.
  • Comply with all federal, state and local regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience as a human resources leader required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as human resources or business is required.
  • Strong knowledge of California labor laws and HR best practices in a manufacturing or distribution setting.
  • Proven experience in employee relations, conflict resolution, and change management.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • HR certification (e.g., SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR) is desirable.
  • Must be highly proficient in Microsoft Office, Excel, database management, spreadsheet creation, email, internet.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Provides constructive and timely feedback to improve performance to various stakeholders.
  • Oversee various vendors such as recruiters and HRIS.
  • Manage a team of 1-2 full-time employees.

Physical Demands

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.

Travel Required

  • Travel between company facilities within the Sacramento, CA area is required.
  • May be required to attend training and industry events as directed by supervisor.

Work Location and Reporting Relationship

  • This position requires the candidate to be on site in Sacramento, CA daily.
  • Work from home or remote work is not available for this position.
  • This position reports to a member of the C-Suite.
